most inspiring political leaders, a book about the core truths that unite us, and the long struggle to discern what those truths are and how best to act upon them, in her own life and across the life of our country.Senator Kamala Harris s commitment to speaking truth is informed by her upbringing The daughter of immigrants, she was raised in an Oakland, California community that cared deeply about social justice her parents an esteemed economist from Jamaica and an admired cancer researcher from India met as activists in the civil rights movement when they were graduate students at Berkeley Growing up, Harris herself never hid her passion for justice, and when she became a prosecutor out of law school, a deputy district attorney, she quickly established herself as one of the most innovative change agents in American law enforcement She progressed rapidly to become the elected District Attorney for San Francisco, and then the chief law enforcement officer of the state of California as a whole Known for bringing a voice to the voiceless, she took on the big banks during the foreclosure crisis, winning a historic settlement for California s working families Her hallmarks were applying a holistic, data driven approach to many of California s thorniest issues, always eschewing stale tough on crime rhetoric as presenting a series of false choices Neither tough nor soft but smart on crime became her mantra Being smart means learning the truths that can make us better as a community, and supporting those truths with all our might That has been the pole star that guided Harris to a transformational career as the top law enforcement official in California, and it is guiding her now as a transformational United States Senator, grappling with an array of complex issues that affect her state, our country, and the world, from health care and the new economy to immigration, national security, the opioid crisis, and accelerating inequality.By reckoning with the big challenges we face together, drawing on the hard won wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, Kamala Harris offers in The Truths We Hold a master class in problem solving, in crisis management, and leadership in challenging times Through the arc of her own life, on into the great work of our day, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values In a book rich in many home truths, not least is that a relatively small number of people work very hard to convince a great many of us that we have less in common than we actually do, but it falls to us to look past them and get on with the good work of living our common truth When we do, our shared effort will continue to sustain us and this great nation, now and in the years to come Get A Copy Kindle Store StoresAudibleBarnes NobleWalmart eBooksGoogle PlayAbebooksBook DepositoryAlibrisBetter World BooksIndieBoundLibraries Or buy for Kindle daughter of an Indian mother and Jamaican father, Harris positions herself as a progressive liberal capable of building an expansive coalition of voters and achieving wide ranging reforms once in office The memoir tests out potential slogans and reads as fairly cautious, in that Harris shies away from advocating democratic socialism, qualifies many of her bolder proposals, and takes great pains to defend her past as a prosecutor Flashes of rage about the past three years make the memoir worth reading, and while I didn t learn as much about Harris s future platform as I would have is difficult to critique political memoirs without seeming to be critical the high minded ideals these writers espouse Kamala Harris appears outside the norm for the kind of Washington politician we ve put up with these past twenty years Formerly Attorney General of California, she had to find solutions to big thorny problems that plagued governance of that state If she didn t solve the problems for all time, she always came down fighting for the side of individuals against corporate entities, big business, or thoughtless, inadequate government Early on in this memoir Senator Harris speaks with some awe of the work of Maura Healy, current Attorney General of Massachusetts, who has been firm in defending statewide consumer protections in that state unlike any other She mentions the work now Senator and presidential hopeful Elizabeth Warren has done to protect consumers from predatory lending practices and investment scams of big banks, or the greed of big pharma Harris own work is strictly in this vein Criminal justice reform, racial justice, environmental protections, wage equality, regulation of banks and corporation, fair practices for consumers For a woman who has never served in the military, no one could ever argue this woman doesn t know what war looks like She has investigated the heart of drug smuggling from Mexico, immigration, sex trafficking, and other rough criminal ventures that make our hair curl She knows what government power means and when and how to use it She s tough And disciplined And principled. After seeing how the country suffers when the presidency is filled by someone inadequate to the demands of the job, we should ever be grateful that someone of Harris gifts stands up to take on the brutality we ve witnessed in Washington Harris is the winged goddess Nemesis wielding a sword she is implacable justice, avenger of crime It will be bloody but it will be over when she s done.Until Donald Trump and and I am convinced that election was not a fair demonstration of the national will , we ve never elected someone with as little support from the major parties Democrats now have very little patience left for what is the husk of a Republican Party, and Republicans appear to detest what Democrats stand for Harris will not be a cross over candidate She will be vengeance. This book is an introduction to Harris and is very good for that Kamala was born in Oakland in the sixties of a Jamaican economist father, and a Tamil Indian endocrinologist mother who d met at Berkeley during the civil rights movement She and a sister, Maya, who is two years younger, were brought up by her single parent mother after the breakup of her parents while she was still a child She married Douglas Emhoff, a lawyer, in 2014 Emhoff had two children during a previous marriage.Harris begins her book talking about her youth and the importance of recognizing that our nation has been enriched by immigration She is proud of her black heritage and chose Howard University for her undergraduate degree and graduated University of CA Hastings College of Law in 1989 She admits to terrible embarrassment at failing the CA bar the first time, but her employers supported her next, successful attempt.Harris began as Deputy District Attorney in San Francisco, then won the race for District Attorney in San Francisco in 2003 By 2004 she d begun a program called Back on Track, to help youthful nonviolent offenders to get back into the community through work The program was considered a success though it had a low graduation rate and was instituted in several other counties and eventually became state law. When Harris won the election for CA State Attorney General in 2010, the race tally was so close the election results were not announced for three weeks One of her first successes was against banks liable after the sub prime mortgage crisis, winning 26 billion from the banks, including 12 million for homeowners As AG, Harris initiated investigations into sex and drug trafficking, hate crimes, environmental degradation, predatory lending, school truancy and foster care, as well as prison conditions and sentencing reform.Barbara Boxer announced she was going to retire as Senator to CA in 2016, and Harris was one of the first to announce her candidacy for Boxer s seat Harris is generally well regarded at home in CA and among those who search for and vet candidates for high national office like Supreme Court and Attorney General of the U.S There has been some grumbling that Harris defends misconduct by law enforcement, but overall these complaints have not hurt her popularity in the state Harris won the congressional election against Loretta Sanchez with 62% of the vote, winning in all but four counties Since being in Washington, Senator Harris has been a hard hitting and outspoken critic of Trump s policies and the Democratic Party now considers her a front runner for president We learn that her name Kamala COMMA la means lotus, a flower that blooms above the water while its roots are planted in mud That s quite a visual for a successful presidency.I listened to the audio of this read by the author and produced by Penguin Audio It is a successful sprint through the high points of a career not yet over We get a sense of her personality, her drive, her family and friends She is quite an This was an interesting read, a little slow in the middle The first and last chapters were my favorites, showcasing her origins and her exhortations for the future It gave me that little extra insight into a potential when I started it candidate that I was looking for The threshold question I m holding for any candidate in the current cycle, beyond the basics of whether I find their values and track record acceptable, and what I think of their platform and agenda, is this Can he or she go toe to toe with whoever, whatever, whenever, wherever, to get the job done If I can get behind what I think they stand for and accept their record of integrity and effectiveness, this will help set the candidates apart Whatever gender, ethnicity, age or or other demographic, do they have the presence, personal power, displaying to the outside a depth of inner fortitude and grace, to do the job in deeply trying times and far from ideal or supportive circumstances Culturally, historically, it can be a tougher standard for some demographics than others to convincingly demonstrate publicly I m questioning it for everyone, of every demographic, whether minority or majority, in power suits or jeans, dresses or other cultural garb The traditional power signals our culture is used to responding to may be evolving or crumbling, but power signaling remains a reality in leadership There were some interesting, sometimes unexpected, strong and weak signalers in the midterms Who will signal clearly, with real strength, authentically and humanely, in this race This book didn t rule out Harris for me in that regard, and made a good case for keeping her in mind as one to watch for having that particular right stuff flag 13 likesLike see review View all 3 comments Jan 11, 2019 Kristin rated it transgender inmates, and vote on SESTA FOSTA I appreciated her comments on the first two above, but did not see any thoughts on the latter, which maybe would ve been unprecedented for a pre campaign organized and jumps around from personal reflection to political streams of consciousness The writing didn t offer a continuity of a memoir It felt political stump speech with some sprinkling of personal information Per usual, the writing felt guarded like political memoirs I have read Senator Harris has quite the robust resume and I enjoyed learning a touch about her, though this book left me yearning I am sure it was meant to be published before she announces her run for 2020 The book does suffer from political cliches and familiar political slogans In my opinion, this book would have much better if was published two to three years from now I want to see what bills she was able to get passed and effectively legislated Regardless, I d recommend this book to people wanting to know important There were a lot of misconceptions made by irresponsible media outlets about a certain overly competent candidate in 2016 and her stupid emails and look what we got stuck with Putin s puppet God, how I wanted HRC so fucking bad to be POTUS.So I m sure while idiots like Mika and Joe yes, I had to call those two ignoramuses out for still bashing that very competent candidate this very morning seriously, those two always get me raging within ten minutes of being awake I thought for like the two or so people reading this review I d at least try to inform you of the literature that s out there involving the candidates.Note, there will be personal biases in these reviews Such as the fact that I find Donald Trump to be a total racist asshole though, is that an opinion that s sort of fact see asshole s reaction to Charlottesville Anything Pro Trump is not going to be tolerated Also, Bernie Sanders is NOT a democrat unless it suits his purposes i.e getting funds for another failed campaign Don t believe me, see that little I next to his name that says it all Also he s full of bull shit which oddly enough fits considering his initials.Yes, I m juvenile. And if you re going to whine we ll this is my space find some other review to express your disgusting MAGA love and Bernie Bro ness seriously, those supporters are the ultimate internet troll.Anyway, back to Kamala Even though she s only been a senator for a couple of years, in some ways she s one of the qualified candidates that the democratic party has She has experience in local, state, and federal government And I think it s really important for anyone who is trying to be president to know how these three different factions of government work. She is also very personable The structure of this book tries to integrate Harris s personal life with her policies and for the most part it works The anecdotes will make the Mika and Joe s of the world happy , while the policy wonks i.e people who actually make a SMART choice when they vote will be happy to know that Harris knows her stuff and you can see that she is very passionate about certain issues I will say though, at the beginning of the book when Harris is going over her childhood there were parts of these personal anecdotes that felt a bit wooden.Again, this was only for the first few chapters though The only other problem I had with this book was it was clearly an I m running for president book And okay, yeah she is And yeah, candidates do in fact often write books before campaigns, but it does sort of effect the overall quality to the book.It still though did what it set out to do, it really did a nice job introducing Harris You can see how her career choice as a prosecutor influenced her policies regarding criminal justice reform I especially like the fact that some of her solutions aren t something that you would find in a typical politician stump speech Like, bail reform It s an important thing, but unless you re familiar with the bail system which most Americans aren t you re not going to really know how much an effect that these reforms would make Harris is pretty clear in laying out her case for it.In addition, to her career influencing her choices in policy You can see how important Kamala s mother was to her and what an impact she had on her life There really was a strong mother daughter relationship there that I think has impacted her life and it really shows. At the end of the day, a book is a book I thought the memoir once it got past the Harris s childhood years was quite compelling I managed to get through it in about two hours after being exhausted after a long day at work Between the book and the town hall that Harris did at CNN last night, she is definitely a top contender for me.I m sure as the race continues to evolve I ll have books and or town halls to read and review However, if you are interested in voting for Kamala I do suggest checking out her book If anything, it will give you a good indicator of what her values and policies are flag 1 likeLike see review Jan 31, 2019 Erin Isgett rated it really liked it I requested this from the library before we leap forward and achieve things beyond the realm of what we thought possible I believe that our job is to provide the force propulsion that will get us to a higher plane. We have yet to achieve that perfect union Alongside the great achievements of the American experiment lies a dark history that we have to deal with in the present In the face of powerful headwinds, it s easy to become tired To become overwhelmed But we cannot give up The beginning of our downfall comes when we stop aspiring.Let me speak one final truth For all of our differences, for all the battles, for all the fights, we are still one American family, and we should act like it We have so much in common than what separates us We need to paint a picture of the future in which everyone can see themselves, and everyone is seen A vibrant portrait of a vibrant United States, where everyone is treated with equal dignity and each of us has the opportunities to make the most of our own lives That is the vision worth fighting for, born out of love of country. It is an age old fight And what we know about it is this Victories won can be lost in complacency Battles lost can be won with new effort Every generation has to recommit to the work, to the effort, and to the true meaning of the word patriot A patriot is not someone who condones the conduct of our country, whatever it does it is someone who fights every day for the ideals of the country, whatever it takesMy daily challenge to myself is to be part of the solution, to be a joyful warrior in the battle to come My challenge to you is to join in that effort To stand up for our ideals and our values Let s not throw up our hands when it s time to roll up our sleeves Not now Not tomorrow Not ever.Years from now, our children and our grandchildren will look up and lock eyes with us They will ask us where we were when the stakes were so high They will ask us what it was like I don t want us to just tell them how we felt I want us to tell them immigrant populations in the States it feels like she s constantly on the look for ways in which people are disadvantaged by existing systems, in order to either restructure things entirely or to build in supplementary support systems This isn t a policy book, so she doesn t outline how she would enact various reforms on a national stage it was written before she announced her presidential bid That said, she gives copious examples of how she s enacted change during her career as a prosecutor, as AG, and as Senator, including various pilot programs that were run first at city level, then at state level This is a woman who gets stuff done I loved listening to her narrate the audio book it feels personable and unforced, and she chuckles at herself and at silly or embarrassing stories than a few times.I did have to smile at how often she uses the phrase speak truth to X It s how she describes her approach to challenging the status quo and addressing inequality wherever she sees it, and she definitely says it a LOT That said, it seems like she s challenged the status quo a lot in her career So here s my ten thousand cheers for Kamala, who speaks truth to power and watches out for belief that politicians must show the math that leads to their specific policy positions as well as her call for everyone to regularly examine their thought processes for implicit biases.Living up to these ideals, the senator walks readers through several political stands that she s taken over the years, including her opposition during the recent confirmation hearing for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh I don t know if Harris will ultimately earn my vote, and this book is certainly not a balanced critical look at the author s platform and record But there s nothing in here that I would personally consider to be disqualifying, and if you re seeking to form a first impression from the candidate s own words, I d say this is a fine place to begin your vetting process flag 1 she brings everyone into the dialogue, recognizing that a conversation of one is completely unproductive I like the plans she outlines for effective legislation to move toward solutions for health
