    3. If I hadn't read Ellis' work, American Psycho, I would have said this is a good first try for a budding writer. Though, seeing the similarities between the two novels -- and there are a fair number -- I'm beginning to wonder if Ellis has very much to say. Granted, the protagonists are sharply different. One's a homicidal maniac; the other is an emotionally distraught drug addict. But each character inhabits the same world, that of wealth and excess, full of shallow people and lack of genuine pur [...]

    4. Less than Zero has several things going for it: It's composed in the same "broken narrative", simplistically-written style as American Psycho; it's relatively short, and could be read in one sitting; it touches on themes, but doesn't explore any of them, choosing instead to present the bare reality of situationsrcing the reader to form his or her own interpretation(s). Where is it lacking? If anything, it emphasis the moral degradation, the apathy, and the drug culture a little too heavily, almo [...]

    5. Ellis is an expert at chronicling the callow consumerism and nihilism of a particular breed of American wealth. He hits it here. These characters aren't at all overblown. They are incredibly shallow. They are exactly as shallow as they would be if they were actually alive. If you don't know people who are exactly like this then you've never known anyone from Sherman Oaks or Beverly Hills. And then, as he always does, once he's created these completely plausible characters, Ellis starts dragging t [...]

    6. I got through this segue of self indulgent stupor in about four hours. It reminded me a little of two films. Requiem for a Dream and 8 MM. The slow inexorable disintegration into an abyss of abuse, addiction and apathy. A bleak maelstrom of trivial and dysfunctional human connections. Ellis has complete command of the "run on" and it works simply because the characters lives are a hideous "run on" of aimless frivolities, fornications and facades. Indeed the parents have either "eaten" most of th [...]
